We have been involved in the sale of electric bicycles for several years now. During this time, we have asked the owners what they like most about riding electric bikes.
The main argument is that you can get from point A to point B without much effort. The ease of riding – feeling like there is always a tailwind and the road is slightly downhill creates a bit of addiction.
Interestingly, most electric bike riders claimed they ride more than when they used a regular bicycle. Seems logical. Caloric expenditure seems lower, but this is compensated by longer time spent in the fresh air.
Also, e-riders like the freedom to choose: whether to pedal more themselves or let the motor do it. So, good choices, right?
The increasing interest in electric bikes in Estonia is also reflected in statistical numbers from search engines. Since the topic is interesting, we decided to compile some frequently asked questions.
Do I have to pedal when riding an electric bicycle?
Actually, a person doesn’t have to do anything in life, but if they want to ride an Electra electric bike, it makes sense to do so. The electric bike has a pedal-assist motor that does not activate without pedaling. The motor provides additional power to pedaling from +40% to +300%. The total power depends on the selected power mode and the type of motor.
How far can I ride on an electric bicycle?
It depends on the model.
With mid-drive motor models, the average is about 75 KM.
With hub motor models, the average is about 45 KM.
But it depends on quite a few factors:
- the weight of the rider along with the bicycle (the heavier you or your backpack is, the more energy is needed)
- the power of the motor and battery – with a mid-drive motor and 500 Wh battery, you can ride up to about 120 km. With a hub motor and 250 Wh battery, you can ride up to about 60 km.
- the environment – the quality of the road, wind, and temperature play a very important role
So, if you don’t have a backpack, the wind is at your back, the road is downhill and smooth, and it’s warm outside, your journey will be significantly longer on one battery charge than if the conditions are the opposite. Therefore, depending on various conditions, the actual range can be quite large: 30-160 km.
What is the maximum speed of an electric bicycle?
Basically, there is no speed limit on an electric bicycle, but the motor stops assisting after 25 km/h.
How long does it take to charge the electric bicycle battery?
Electra uses two types of batteries: 500 Wh and 250 Wh. The first variant charges 100% in 4.5 hours and the second in 4 hours.
Can the battery be removed from the bike?
With mid-drive motor models that have a Bosch battery, yes, and you don’t need any special tools for that. You only need a key (included) to unlock the battery. The battery lock is included for security purposes.
With hub motor models, the batteries cannot be removed; they are fully integrated into the bicycle frame.
Does the Bosch battery need to be removed from the bike while charging?
No, but it can be removed. The battery can be charged while still attached to the electric bike and can also be charged when it is removed (for example, on a desk at the office). So the choice is yours!
The batteries of hub motor models cannot be removed from the electric bike and must be charged while attached to the bike.
Can I ride my electric bike in the rain?
Of course, because Electra motors and batteries have moisture resistance rated at IP 54 (dust and splash resistant).
Can I ride my electric bike in winter when it’s below freezing?
Yes, if you dress warmly. But in cold weather, you should consider that the battery’s performance significantly decreases in subzero temperatures.
Can I charge the battery outdoors in winter?
No, if the temperature is below 0°C! The suitable charging temperature is from +1°C to a maximum of +40°C. But it’s best to charge the battery at room temperature.
How do I wash an electric bicycle?
You should be careful when washing an electric bicycle. Definitely do not use a pressure washer, as this can damage electronic components! If the electric bike is very muddy, we recommend cleaning the larger mud off the tires using water from a hose while avoiding direct water contact with the motor and battery, and then cleaning the rest of the electric bike with a damp cloth. Finally, the motor and battery should be dried with a soft cloth. It’s also good to oil the chain afterward.
And if you don’t want to do it yourself, you can always trust the cleaning of the bike to specialist care!
Electric bicycles are here to stay! Indeed, these electric vehicles have recently been a hot topic. They are exciting, high-tech, quiet, innovative, and sometimes status symbols. See what models of electric bicycles Electra offers.
For example, in the Netherlands, more electric bicycles have been sold than regular bicycles since 2018. Some even believe that mechanical bicycles will soon become museum exhibits. Quite a bold statement, but time will tell. There is indeed some charm in these electric bicycles. 😀
